Types of Starter
Direct-On-Line (DOL) Starter
A Direct-on-line (DOL) starter is a straightforward and widely used motor starting method where the motor is connected directly to the power supply, allowing it to receive the full supply voltage immediately upon startup.
Stator Resistance starter
A Stator Resistance starter primarily controls the high inrush current at motor startup by inserting resistors in series with the motor’s stator windings. This insertion of resistance into the stator circuit limits the amount of initial current flowing to the motor, thus reducing the initial torque and current draw.
Rotor Resistance or Slip Ring Motor Starter
A Rotor Resistance or Slip Ring Motor starter is designed explicitly for slip ring induction motors, commonly used in applications requiring high starting torque and smooth acceleration. This type of starter adds external resistance to the rotor circuit during the startup phase.
Autotransformer Starter
An autotransformer starter is a motor starter that controls the initial inrush current by reducing the voltage supplied to the motor at startup. This starter is particularly effective when minimizing electrical disturbance and mechanical shock, which is critical, especially in larger motors.
Star Delta Starter
A Star-Delta starter is a widely used method for starting three-phase induction motors, particularly in applications that demand reduced starting current to protect both the motor and the electrical network. The Star-Delta starter operates by initially connecting the motor windings in a star (or “Y”) configuration, which reduces the starting voltage applied to each motor phase.
Soft Starter
A Soft Starter is a sophisticated motor starting device designed to control and gradually increase the voltage supplied to an electric motor during startup, thereby minimizing the high inrush current and mechanical stress typically associated with direct motor starts.
Functions of Starters

Control
The control function is mainly carried out by the contactor component of a starter. It is controlling the opening and closing of the power electrical circuit. The switching is done by the main contacts (poles) of the contactor. An electromagnetic coil is energized, which open or close the contacts. This electromagnetic coil has a nominal control voltage, and can either be an AC or DC voltage.

Short-Circuit Protection
In industrial applications, normal load current can be up to thousands of amperes. In the case of a short-circuit fault, the fault current can go over 100,000 amperes. This can cause severe damage to the equipment. The short-circuit protection disconnects the supply and prevents the potential damage in a safe manner.

Overload Protection
When a motor draws more current than it is designed to, an overload condition is caused. The main objective of an overload relay is to detect the excess currents. When an overload is detected, the auxiliary contact of the overload relay opens the circuit and prevents the motor from burning out or overheating.

Disconnecting and Breaking
In order to prevent an unintended restart, it is required to disconnect the motor from the main power circuit. In order to safely perform maintenance on a motor or starter, a motor must be able to switch off and be isolated from the power. The disconnect switch of the circuit provides this function.
Precautions for Use of Starter
Do not operate the starter motor when the engine is running as this could result in damage to the starter motor pinion & flywheel ring gear.
Do not crank continuously if the engine doesn't fire immediately, allow some time to cool the starter motor before cranking again.
If still the engine does not start, ascertain the cause and do not drain the battery by cranking the starter motor.
Do not move the vehicle using the starter motor.
Do not subject the starter motor to continuous oil/ water drip.
Do not accelerate immediately after a start (allow the engine idle RPM to stabilize).
For Starter Motor testing, avoid striking of power source cable with Starter Motor battery & solenoid terminals.
To protect Starter Motor terminals from painting marks, avoid application of grease. During painting of the engine, avoid paint on pinion, pinion shaft.
The Electrical Starter Motor should not be used as the prime mover for the vehicle (as in cases where the vehicle gets drained of fuel and the Starter Motor is subjected to drive the vehicle).
After engine fires, Electrical Starters Motors should not be subjected to operation.
Step-by-Step Guide to Replacing a Starter
Step 1: Prepare Your Vehicle
Wait for your vehicle’s engine to cool down before working on the starter. You’ll usually be in the vicinity of the exhaust downpipe, which could be extremely hot. Position your car on a flat surface, engage the parking brake, jack it up, and rest its weight on jack stands.
Step 2: Access the Starter
This is the step that varies the most. For some vehicles, the starter is immediately accessible under the car beside the transmission bell housing. On many late-model vehicles, though, there are parts to remove before you can access it. It can include skid plates, shields, the exhaust, harnesses, a wheel, and so on.
Step 3: Disconnect the Electrical Connections
First, disconnect the battery’s negative cable to prevent any possibility of grounding the circuit or accidental engagement. There can be a few different circuits to disconnect at the battery, including a large-gauge power wire, an ignition wire, and a ground. Disconnect all circuits using appropriate tools including a wrench or ratchet and socket, or a screwdriver.
Step 4: Remove the Starter Bolts
Typically, three to four bolts secure the starter motor in place. Remove these bolts completely. You may need long extensions on your ratchet to reach them from the top side on some models.
Step 5: Remove the Starter
With the bolts removed, free the starter motor from its location. You might need your pry bar to wiggle it free. Pay attention to how it comes out as you’ll want to follow the same path to put the new one into place.
Step 6: Install the New Starter
Fit the new starter motor into the bell housing opening. Then, install the starter bolts, torquing all fasteners to spec.
Step 7: Reconnect the Electrical
Connect the electrical connections you removed earlier. After they’re all attached, reconnect the battery.
